I’m Elías Xavier Luna, a chapín living in the United States. When a Guatemalan passport expires, the first step is not paying a fee or searching for an appointment. First, you need to identify which passport service actually fits your situation.
This information comes from Consulado de Guatemala América, an independent and unofficial platform. Requirements are based on information published by the Guatemalan Institute of Migration and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but appointment availability, payment methods, and delivery procedures can vary by consulate. When a detail depends on the location, it must be confirmed on the official website.
First Decide Whether You Need a Renewal or a Validity Extension
An expired passport does not automatically lead to one procedure. Guatemalans in the United States generally need to distinguish between two options: applying for a new passport or temporarily extending the validity of the passport they already have.
Should you renew the passport or is a validity extension enough? That depends on when the passport was issued, its physical condition, the number of unused pages, the age of the holder when it was issued, and whether any personal information has changed since then.
Full Passport Renewal
With a renewal, the consulate accepts an application for a new passport. The previous passport forms part of the application, identity information is verified, and the applicant pays the fee for the requested validity period.
For passport applications handled through Guatemalan consular missions, the Guatemalan Institute of Migration publishes the following fees:
- US$65 for a passport valid for five years.
- US$100 for a passport valid for ten years, available to adults.
Payment is made according to the instructions of the consulate where the passport will be processed. The accepted payment method may differ between permanent consulates and special consular events, so check the instructions before going.
Validity Extension of the Current Passport
A validity extension does not provide a new passport booklet. Instead, it allows the existing passport to remain usable through the authorized extension procedure, provided that the document meets the applicable conditions.
The Guatemalan Institute of Migration provides for an 18-month extension at no cost and a three-year extension for US$25. Adults and minors who meet the requirements may process these extensions in person. Courier service is limited to adults and applies to an extension, not to a full passport renewal.
That distinction matters. Mailing a passport while expecting a completely new booklet can lead to wasted time, shipping expenses, and an application that never matched the service being offered.
Practical Comparison of the Options
| Feature | Renewal | 18-Month Extension | 3-Year Extension |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document received | New passport | Current passport is retained | Current passport is retained |
| Published fee | US$65 for 5 years or US$100 for 10 years | No cost | US$25 |
| Required year of issue | Not restricted to passports issued from 2013 onward | Must meet the extension conditions | Issued in 2013 or later |
| Blank pages | Does not determine renewal eligibility | At least 2 blank sheets, equal to 4 pages | At least 4 blank sheets, equal to 8 pages |
| Name or civil status changes | Reviewed using updated documents | Not applicable | Not applicable |
| Courier service | Should not be assumed to be available | May apply to adults | Must be confirmed with the consulate |
Check the Actual Condition of Your Expired Passport
Do not look only at the expiration date. Open the booklet, inspect the biographical data page, count the available pages, and compare the printed information with your current identity documents.
The Passport Is Expired, Complete, and in Good Condition
This is the simplest situation. You can prepare for a full renewal and, if the passport meets the requirements, also consider a validity extension. Pay particular attention to the year the document was issued and whether it has already received an extension.
Take the expired passport to the appointment. Do not cut it, remove pages, or try to peel off labels. The old passport remains the key that opens the renewal file, even though it is no longer valid for ordinary international travel.
The Passport Is Expired and Damaged
A passport may be considered damaged when the biographical data page is torn, wet, detached, punctured, or difficult to read. A blurred photograph, lifted laminate, missing pages, or numbers that can no longer be identified also deserve attention.
Even when damaged, the passport should still be presented. The Guatemalan Institute of Migration indicates that the previous passport must be submitted during renewal even when the document is deteriorated.
A validity extension is different. An extension does not apply when the data page is damaged or the passport is not in suitable physical condition. In that situation, prepare for a renewal instead.
The Passport Was Lost After It Expired
Not having the physical booklet changes the documentation required, but it does not necessarily prevent you from applying for a new passport. For procedures outside Guatemala, a person who no longer has the expired passport must present a police report or a sworn declaration issued by the consular authority, as applicable.
A photograph of the passport stored on your phone may help you recover the passport number, issue date, or other printed details. It does not replace the required report or declaration.
Before going to the consulate, write down whatever you remember: the approximate place of loss, the date, the passport number, and what happened. If the passport was stolen, describe it as stolen. Do not treat theft, loss, and physical damage as the same situation.
The Passport Was Issued While the Holder Was a Minor
A person who received the passport while under 18 and is now an adult should not assume that a courier extension is available. Official requirements exclude adults from that courier option when the passport they present was issued while they were still minors.
In that situation, the safer route is to apply for renewal as an adult using current identity documentation.
The Personal Information No Longer Matches
Check the full name, surnames, date of birth, CUI, and civil status. If there has been a name change, an update to information recorded on the DPI, or a change in civil status, an extension does not apply.
A renewal may require the underlying records to be updated before the new passport can be issued. Do not expect a consular officer to automatically correct a discrepancy that originates in the Civil Registry or DPI record.
A common example is a passport showing one surname while the DPI reflects a later change. Another occurs when the birth certificate lists names in a different order. The difference may look small. It is not.
The Passport Has Already Been Extended Once
A validity extension may be applied only once to the same passport. If the passport has already received an extension, the next step is renewal.
Unused pages do not change that limitation. The restriction applies because the passport has already received an extension, not merely because of the amount of space remaining.
Documents for an Adult Renewing an Expired Guatemalan Passport
For adults processing a passport outside Guatemala, the main requirements include an identity document, proof of payment, and the previous passport. If one of these is unavailable, prepare the accepted alternative before reaching the consular window.
Original DPI
The primary option is the original Documento Personal de Identificación (DPI). Make sure the document is legible and that its information matches the previous passport.
A U.S. driver’s license, state identification card, or permanent resident card does not automatically replace the DPI for this Guatemalan procedure. Those documents may help establish identity in other situations, but the passport process relies on Guatemalan identity records.
Birth Certificate When You Do Not Have a DPI
If you do not have a DPI, the Guatemalan Institute of Migration allows an adult to present a current birth certificate. The general information for passports processed abroad uses that requirement, while other official consular information also emphasizes the value of a recent certificate that includes the CUI number.
Before relying on the certificate, check the following:
- Full given names and surnames.
- Date and place of birth.
- Código Único de Identificación (CUI) number.
- No obvious errors or conflicting information.
- Full document is clearly legible.
If the certificate does not show a CUI, contains pending annotations, or has important discrepancies, it must be confirmed on the official website whether the consulate will accept it or whether the civil record needs to be updated first.
Previous Guatemalan Passport
Bring the complete booklet, not only a photocopy of the biographical page. Present it even if it expired several years ago or has visible damage.
Protect the passport when taking it to the appointment. A transparent sleeve or simple envelope can help if the cover is loose, but do not apply glue, place tape over the data page, or make home repairs that cover information.
Proof of Payment
The consular procedure requires proof of the corresponding payment. The published fee is US$65 for a five-year passport and US$100 for a ten-year passport.
Do not confuse these amounts with passport fees charged for procedures completed inside Guatemala, where the five-year passport has a different price. Applications processed in the United States follow the fee schedule for passports handled through Guatemalan consular missions.
The consulate may provide specific instructions involving a money order, consular cashier, or another accepted payment method. That detail must be confirmed before purchasing any payment instrument. Do not guess the payee, and never make a money order payable to an individual unless official instructions explicitly require it.
Appointment Confirmation
The consular appointment itself is free. Guatemala’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns applicants not to pay intermediaries and advises against sharing personal documents with third parties.
Save the appointment confirmation on your phone and, when possible, carry a printed copy. Verify the consular location, date, time, and applicant name.
Important: an appointment for an adult passport should not be used for a minor, and an extension appointment should not be confused with a renewal. Choosing the wrong service may prevent the consulate from completing the procedure that day.
Renewing a Passport Without a DPI
Not having a DPI does not mean you should arrive with only the expired passport. Prepare a current birth certificate instead and verify that its information clearly identifies you.
Compare the Documents Before Booking the Appointment
Place the passport and birth certificate side by side. Compare the information carefully. Check spelling, accents where applicable, the order of surnames, compound names, dates, and municipality of birth.
If you find a discrepancy, do not erase anything or try to explain it with a handwritten note. First determine which record contains the current information. A Civil Registry correction or update may be necessary.
Do Not Depend Only on an Old Photocopy
An old copy of a birth record may help you locate information, but it does not necessarily satisfy the requirement for a current certificate. The consulate needs documentation that allows the applicant’s current Civil Registry information to be verified.
If obtaining the document before the appointment is not possible, confirm directly with the consulate whether another consultation or assistance option is available. Mobile consular events do not necessarily provide the same civil registration services as permanent locations.
Renewal When the Passport Was Lost or Stolen
When the previous passport is unavailable, the loss must be documented formally. For a passport procedure outside Guatemala, an applicant may need a police report or a sworn declaration issued by the consular authority, depending on the circumstances.
Prepare Information About the Missing Passport
Look through email attachments, travel records, immigration applications, or personal photographs for a copy of the passport. Write down:
- Passport number, if known.
- Approximate date of issue.
- Expiration date.
- Place where it was issued.
- Approximate date and location where it was lost.
This information does not replace the formal document required for the case, but it can help describe what happened accurately.
Police Report and Consular Sworn Declaration
The official information for Guatemalan passports processed abroad provides for a report or a sworn declaration issued by the consular authority when the applicant does not have the expired passport.
The appropriate authority, format, and acceptable age of a police report may depend on the individual case and consular location. It must be confirmed on the official website.
Do Not Request an Extension Without the Passport Booklet
A validity extension requires the expired or soon-to-expire passport to be presented. Without the physical booklet, there is no document to which the extension can be applied. The applicant should instead prepare for renewal and follow the procedure for a lost or stolen passport.
When a Validity Extension Is Not an Option
An extension costs less than a new passport, but it comes with specific restrictions. Do not choose it solely because of the lower cost or because an upcoming trip is approaching.
Passport Issued Before 2013
Passports issued before 2013 do not qualify for the extension described by the Guatemalan Institute of Migration. A renewal is required instead.
Damaged Biographical Data Page
If the page containing the photograph and personal information is damaged or is no longer in suitable condition, the passport does not qualify for the extension.
Changes to DPI Information or Civil Status
A change to names, surnames, DPI information, or civil status prevents the passport from being extended using the previous information. Prepare updated records and apply for renewal.
Passport Issued While the Holder Was a Minor
An adult presenting a passport that was issued while they were a minor does not qualify for the courier extension option.
A Previous Extension Has Already Been Applied
The same passport cannot receive another validity extension. The next procedure must be a renewal.
Not Enough Blank Pages
An 18-month extension requires at least two blank sheets, equal to four pages. The three-year extension requires four blank sheets, equal to eight pages.
Count them carefully. A page containing a stamp, annotation, or visa should not be treated as completely blank.
How to Choose the Correct Consular Location
The United States has permanent Guatemalan consulates as well as consular Saturdays and mobile consular events. They do not all operate the same way, and they may not offer every service.
Permanent Consulate
A permanent consulate has an established address and an assigned consular jurisdiction. Before booking an appointment, check which consulate serves the state or county where you live.
The geographically closest consulate is not always the one assigned to your jurisdiction. In addition, some consulates are listed as passport printing centers while other locations may handle different stages of the process.
Consular Saturday
A consular Saturday is a special service day. It does not mean that the consulate opens every Saturday, nor should applicants assume that walk-ins will be accepted.
The date, available services, and admission procedure are announced for each event. Confirm the details through the official calendar and the channels of the corresponding consulate.
Mobile Consulate
Mobile consular events bring services to cities located farther from permanent consulates. Passport data capture is among the services that may be offered.
“Data capture” does not necessarily mean that the passport booklet will be handed over immediately. Application intake, printing, and delivery may take place at different stages or locations. The timing and delivery method must be confirmed for that specific event.
Booking the Correct Appointment
Do not submit personal information to a website that imitates the Guatemalan consular appointment system. Enter through the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal and select the appropriate consular location.
Select the Exact Service
Distinguish between options such as:
- First passport.
- Passport renewal.
- Validity extension.
- Passport for a minor.
- Replacement or another procedure related to a lost passport.
The wording shown in the appointment system may change. If an option is missing or its description is unclear, it must be confirmed on the official website.
Enter the Name Exactly as It Appears on Your Documents
Do not use nicknames, shortened names, or a surname you use socially when it does not match the Guatemalan identity document. The appointment record should identify the same person who will appear at the consular window.
Each Applicant May Need a Separate Appointment
Do not assume that one family appointment covers everyone. When several family members need passports, confirm whether the appointment system requires a separate booking for each applicant.
Do Not Buy an Appointment
The appointment is free. No one should charge you to “open appointments,” move you ahead in line, or guarantee consular service. Do not send photographs of your DPI, birth certificate, or passport to strangers who claim they can obtain an appointment for you.
What Happens During the Consular Appointment
The exact order may vary, but a passport renewal generally involves submitting documents, verifying identity, checking payment, and capturing the information required to issue the new document.
Identity Review
The consular officer compares the previous passport with the DPI or birth certificate. When the passport has been lost, the officer reviews the corresponding report or sworn declaration.
If the information does not match, the application may require additional verification. Finding those differences at home, before the appointment, can save another trip.
Data Capture
During the procedure, the information needed for the new passport is recorded. Before the process is completed, carefully check the spelling of your given names and surnames as well as your date and place of birth.
Correct a visible error then and there. Later, it can be harder.
Keep the Receipt or Application Record
Do not leave without keeping the receipt or document provided by the consulate. Check whether it contains an application number, tracking instructions, delivery information, or additional notices.
Also confirm whether you must collect the passport personally, receive it through an authorized service, or follow another delivery procedure established by the consulate.
How Long Does an Expired Passport Renewal Take?
There is no single delivery period that applies to every Guatemalan consulate and consular event in the United States. Timing depends on the location, printing capacity, identity review, and delivery method.
An appointment also does not guarantee that a new passport will be issued and handed over on the same day. The Guatemalan Institute of Migration publishes information about passport printing centers at certain consulates, but the presence of a printing center does not by itself guarantee immediate delivery.
The current processing period must be confirmed with the consulate. Avoid buying an international flight based only on an estimate found on social media or on another person’s experience.
Traveling While a Passport Renewal Is Pending
An expired passport should not be treated like a regular valid passport for international travel. A passport renewal receipt does not replace the passport either.
A validity extension becomes effective only after it has been properly applied and validated under the corresponding procedure. Booking an appointment or sending documents does not automatically extend the passport.
When someone urgently needs to return to Guatemala, a consulate may have procedures involving travel documentation other than an ordinary passport. Those cases should be discussed directly with the consular location because the available option depends on the circumstances and the travel document that can legally be authorized.
Differences When the Expired Passport Belongs to a Minor
A passport application for a child or teenager should not be prepared using the same document list as an adult renewal. The presence or authorization of parents, birth records, and legal representation changes what must be submitted.
General requirements published for minors applying for a passport abroad include:
- Recent birth certificate for the minor showing the CUI.
- Identity documentation for the parents.
- Expired passport when the application is a renewal.
- Proof of payment.
- Authorization from an absent parent when only one parent appears.
Additional documents are required when a third party appears on behalf of the minor, legal representation is involved, one parent has died, or a court order affects parental authority. A simple letter written at home is not enough.
Situations That Commonly Interrupt the Process
Many problems do not begin with a difficult requirement. They begin with a decision made too early. Check these situations before leaving home:
- Leaving the expired passport at home because it is “no longer valid.”
- Bringing only a U.S. driver’s license.
- Using an old photocopy of a birth certificate without checking whether it is current or shows the CUI.
- Trying to extend a passport issued before 2013.
- Requesting another extension for a passport that has already been extended.
- Counting blank passport pages incorrectly.
- Ignoring a discrepancy between the DPI and the passport.
- Requesting an extension when the biographical data page is damaged.
- Buying a money order before confirming the amount and payee.
- Booking an appointment for the wrong service.
- Assuming a mobile consulate will deliver the passport on the same day.
- Paying an intermediary for an appointment that is free.
Which Procedure Fits Your Situation?
| Situation | Procedure to Consider | Special Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Expired and in good condition | Renewal or extension, if eligible | Check issue year, blank pages, and previous extensions |
| Lost or stolen | Renewal | Police report or consular sworn declaration |
| Issued before 2013 | Renewal | Do not use the extension route |
| Damaged data page | Renewal | Bring the damaged passport booklet |
| Name or civil status change | Renewal | Update and verify identity records |
| No DPI | Renewal | Current birth certificate, preferably with visible CUI |
| Passport already extended | Renewal | Do not request a second extension |
| Issued while holder was a minor and holder is now an adult | Adult renewal | Use current identity documents; do not rely on courier service |
| Passport belongs to a minor | Minor passport renewal | Parent documents, authorizations, or legal representation documents |
Final Check Before Going to the Consulate
One day before the appointment, arrange your documents in the order in which they are likely to be requested. A few minutes of checking can prevent another trip to the consulate.
- Complete expired Guatemalan passport.
- Original DPI or current birth certificate.
- Police report or consular declaration if the passport was lost.
- Correct proof of payment.
- Appointment confirmation.
- Documents supporting changes to personal information, when applicable.
- A simple protective sleeve or envelope for a damaged booklet.
- Confirmed address and service hours for the consular location.
Check once more that the appointment is for renewal rather than a validity extension. Also verify whether that consulate has published special instructions concerning photographs, copies, payment methods, or passport delivery. Procedures can differ from one location to another.
With the correct documents ready, the process is easier to follow: submit the paperwork, verify your identity, review the recorded information, and keep the receipt. Better prepared than improvising at the window.
